Losing water? How to tell if your pool is leaking

In the hot summer months pools can lose a significant amount to evaporation, making it harder to tell if the pool is losing water from a leak. A quick DIY test can help you tell if there's a leak to be fixed.

How much evaporation is normal?

Generally speaking, pools lose approximately 1/4” of water per day on average, though this can vary due to factors like wind, air temperature, water temperature, humidity and of course, the pool’s total surface area. The hotter the temperature, the drier the air, and the more exposure to sunlight your pool receives, the faster the rate of evaporation will be.

The bucket test

  1. Place a large bucket so that it's partially submerged into the pool water
  2. Secure the bucket so it remains in place
  3. Fill up the bucket with pool water until the water level inside and outside the bucket match.
  4. Mark the waterline on the outside of the bucket with a waterproof marker or tape
  5. Compare the levels after 24 hours

If the swimming pool level is now lower than the level in the bucket, you likely have a leak.
